Forest and Rural Fire Fighters

Forest and Rural Fire Fighters

Forest fire fighters are another sort of firefighter. They have many roles, including spotters who report in when they see any signs of a burn. Spotters may be on foot or motorized vehicle, or they may reside in watchtowers in high risk areas. One of the most difficult parts of firefighting in rural areas is the difficulty in bringing water to the fight. There aren't many hydrants in the field! In order to combat fires in these situations, firemen often deprive the fire of its most badly needed resource: fuel.

By clearing large sections of trees, brush, and grass, fire lines are formed across which the fire cannot pass. Of course, in windy environments, the breeze can blow embers across the fire line and then firefighters are faced with the unfortunate reality of starting over. Not only can it be discouraging, it can also be very dangerous. Many a brave firefighter has lost his life when the fire crosses the line. The most dangerous role of all is that of the smoke jumpers: firefighters who parachute out from airplanes to get behind the fire.
