Fire Related Employment

Larger fire departments consist of several divisions to divvy up the tasks needed. The fire prevention division is often made up of older firefighters who are no longer capable or have the desire to be on the front line. This is not to say they are not vital nor skilled in the process of fire fighting. The fire prevention division will include inspectors who visit locations before fires happen to make sure safety is enforced. They will also work with new buildings and city codes, permits, etc to make sure that no dangerous structures are created.

Fire inspectors also come to fire scenes during and after the blaze has been extinguished to try and deduce the cause of the inferno. They will be responsible for interviewing eyewitnesses, examining evidence at the scene, and filing reports on what they have observed. Some fire inspectors specialize in arson cases, and they may also be asked to be expert witnesses at trials.
