Fire Fighting Training

Firefighting Training

Generally fire fighters are required to have at least a high school diploma, but given the competitive nature of jobs available, a two or four year degree is strongly encouraged. Courses or an associate degree in fire science or related fields are highly encouraged. Additionally applicants will be subjected to a series of physical and written exams.

New recruits are trained at a central department training center or academy. In these courses, firefighters will learn fire prevention, techniques for combating fire, building fire codes, hazardous material handling (HAZMAT), emergency medical procedures, first aid, cardio-pulmonary resuscitation and advanced life saving techniques.

Firemen are also taught how to handle fire hoses and other extinguishers, axes, chainsaws, ladders and other tools vital to the trade. After completely the academy courses, recruits are deployed to a fire company where they continue their apprenticeship.
