Firefighting Promotions

The chances for advancement as a fire fighter are numerous. As mentioned previously, one way to move ahead is to continue with education and training. Larger divisions will offer salary increases as a fireman attends more courses, and all of them provide raises as one becomes more experienced with years of service.

Work performance is of course a major criteria as well. Besides this, opportunities for officer, captain, and chief positions will afford opportunities for promotion. For the higher ranks, most companies require an advanced degree of either two or four years in public administration, fire science, or a related field.

The ranks of a fireman usually follow the following course: engineer, lieutenant, captain, battalion chief, assistant chief, deputy chief, and finally chief.
