Fire Fighting Education

Firefighting Education

After the initial academy, a recruit begins the probation period. The probation period can last up for years, sometimes as many as four. This is an intermediate stage which combines extended book learning, physical training, and trial by fire under the watchful supervision of the captain and other senior firefighters.

Firefighters are generally required to be certified as EMTs as well (emergency medical technicians). EMT training has a number of levels, the most simple of which is EMT basic. In some instances this training can occur in the fire academy, other times the cadet must seek this out on his own.

Besides local training, national courses are also offered by a number of services including the U.S. National Fire Academy. There are also a number of state certification programs. It behooves fire fighters to take these courses, not only for their own education but also because it can lead to a higher pay grade.
